Dee Speed

Dee Speed is a multidisciplinary design leader and the Director of Design for YouTube Music, known for her work across tech, art, and luxury branding. Professional Background Dee Speed is a highly accomplished designer with over 14 years of experience leading creative teams at major tech companies including YouTube, Google, Disney, Yahoo, and Flickr. She has also consulted for Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and ESPN, demonstrating a broad influence across digital, physical, and interactive design. Her expertise spans graphic design, industrial design, interior design, photography, fine art, and interaction design, making her a versatile creative professional. Current Roles and Projects Currently, Dee Speed serves as the Director of Design for YouTube Music, where she oversees design strategy and execution for music-focused digital experiences. She also runs her own design studio, deedee9:14, founded in 2000, which offers services ranging from brand development to luxury homewares and interior products. Notably, she has collaborated with Nigerian singer Olisae as the Creative Director for his personal luxury brand, helping craft a unique visual identity and luxury fashion line. Achievements and Recognition Speed’s work has been recognized in both corporate and artistic contexts. Her designs have contributed to some of the most popular digital apps of the last two decades, particularly in music and creator-focused platforms. As a fine artist, her work has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern in London. She has also been featured in design publications and projects, including Dwell magazine and luxury installations like the Royal Suite at St. Regis Cairo. Leadership and Influence Beyond her design work, Dee Speed is a prominent voice in women and Black leadership in design, participating in initiatives like AIGA San Francisco’s WILD Voices speaker series. She is known for mentoring emerging designers, advocating for inclusive design practices, and emphasizing the integration of usability, business strategy, and creative vision. Personal and Cultural Impact Originating from New Orleans, Dee Speed has shared her journey from initially pursuing medical school to becoming a leading design director in Silicon Valley. She is celebrated for her bold, innovative approach, her love for music and AfroBeats, and her ability to blend cultural influences into her design work. Her career reflects a commitment to pushing creative boundaries while fostering inclusive and impactful design leadership.
